My first Walk

‘Lomonds’

My first walk was from Craigmead car park to the West Lomond summit and back to Craigmead. I decided on this because, apart from the summit peak (is that correct term?) it’s quite a gentle walk. It had me puffing but that’s because I’m so unfit.

On the advice of a friend, I downloaded the ViewRanger app and searched for the route. One came up from a user, Eck Thump, and his remarks convinced me that this was the route for me! He said – A slow, very unfit walk up West Lomond and back to the car.

That worked for me and so off I set on 1st Dec 2020 wearing a new pair of boots, a new rucksack, base layers & mid layers, all cheap as chips from the sports direct sale (half price!) I like chips btw. I also invested in a pair of waterproof trousers and socks. I forgot gloves, won’t do that again, I’m waiting for gaiters to arrive in the post.

The walk went very well I thought. i expected to be absolutely broken by the time I got to the top but, while I rested a few times going up the ‘back’ of the peak, I didn’t stop for too many minutes. I spent a good 10 minutes at the trig point before heading back down, there was a cold wind blowing. I went down the peak using the steep path, I was glad I didn’t try to go up that way…

The following images are from the walk. One shows one of the Iron Age hut circles that can be seen on the walk, this was the furthest I’ve ever been on the West Lomond until today – it’s a heather bank raised above the moss & grass. Another shows some of the reservoirs outside Leslie. The nearest on the right is called Harperleas, on the left, the Ballo. Furthest away, the Holl. I’ve fished them all many years ago.
