Shiehallion is my first Munro, and the hardest walk I’ve done so far. I walked at around 1mph and the walk took 6.5 hours, I Had hoped to do it in around 4.5 – 5 hours but I had unrealisitc expectations about how good my legs are! They were like jelly when i got back to the car, my knees were sore, but at least this time my feet were OK after getting a pair of boots that actually fit me. I’ve been size 10 as long as I can remember, but it seems walking on hills makes you feet swell and i was trapping a nerve in my right foot after 4 or five miles. I got a new pair of boots, size 10.5, no more trapped nerve.
The photos are chronological in order, start to finish. The first is a nice view of the rising sun lighting up the heather on the hill. Then there’s a large stone that has prehistoric cup marks on it, it also happens to be similar in shape to Schihallion but it’s not known if that’s by prehistoric design or by chance. (design I reckon) There are a few views of the pathway and some from all directions as I made my way up.
The walk was hard going, particularly after the first plateau is reached & the boulder fields start. This was also complicated by snow, some knee deep in places that made the going tougher. i took no chances when it came to falling, I was under instructions not to break anything! Sadly there was no summit view, typical! I posted a sunny photo to Facebook & then the cloud came down. It snowed a bit at the summit and a couple of times on the way down but all things considered it was a good day. Those that were going up after will have got a view though, the cloud was gone when I got back down. I’ll just have to go back again, but, it’s Mayar & Driesh next for me on my next set of days off.
